Music 101 Fundamentals of Music This course is designed for the general student and covers the fundamentals of music, including notation, meters and rhythm, scales and key signatures, intervals, triads, and musical symbols and terminology.
Music 111 Music Appreciation This course is a survey of Western classical/art music from the Middle Ages to the present day with an emphasis on perceptive, analytical listening. Topics include the elements of music, musical forms, music periods, styles, musical genres, and the role of music and musicians in the Western world.
Music 121 Music History & Literature This course traces the development of Western classical/art music as a reflection of cultural shifts from Ancient Greece to 1750 CE, including the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Baroque periods.  Students analyze the relationship between music, politics, society, and other aspects of Western culture.
Music 216 Music Theory A series of four levels of courses for music majors that explores the analysis of how music is composed and how this affects its interpretation by performers and listeners.
Music 217 Musicianship The series of four levels of courses for music majors that provides the opportunity to build proficiency in dictation (writing down music that is heard) and audiation (hearing music by reading it) as demonstrated by sight-reading (performing written music at first sight).

 

Music 250 Performance Workshop Students work in a master-class environment, rehearsing music appropriate to their instrument/voice at skill level 1. Students prepare, rehearse and perform or record selected musical works, focusing on rhythm, intonation, articulation, expression.
Music 501 College Choir Students are introduced to choral ensemble singing. Emphasis is placed on vocal technique and choral elements, such as blend, intonation, diction and music reading. Repertoire is chosen on the basis of the ensemble's ability and represents historical and current styles of music. Consult the college catalog for specific information.
Music 745 Symphonic Band This ensemble emphases the development of technical and artistic abilities using a wide range of band literature, leading to public performances. An audition may be required for enrollment. Check your course catalog for more specific information.
Music 781 Studio Jazz Band This course provides training in sight-reading of jazz band literature and rehearsing of literature to develop ensemble balance, style and intonation. This course also includes on and off campus performance.

 

Music 161 Intro to Music Technology Students develop skills in the use of synthesizers, Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI), computers, musical acoustics, sound design, and music software. Students develop and apply technical, composition, and performance skills through the use of digital synthesizers in conjunction with computers and music software.
Music 165 Intro to Recording Arts This course is an introduction to the theory and practice of acoustics, audio, and recording. Topics include the nature of sound, basic acoustics, audio systems and terminology, microphone principles and usage, recording styles, recording studio equipment, and multi-track recording procedures.
Music 261 Electronic Music Workshop

The electro-acoustic music techniques introduced in Music 161 are extended in this course. Students apply advanced electro-acoustic music equipment, software and techniques used in a contemporary music project studio. The production of music using advanced synthesis, computer applications, MIDI, signal processing and recording techniques are emphasized.

Music 265 Recording Arts Workshop Through lecture and hands-on experience students will study acoustic principles, microphones, multi-track recording, overdubbing and mixing, using hardware equipment and digital audio workstation (DAW) computer applications.

 

Music 321 - 324 Elementary Piano I - IV Learn basic techniques used in playing piano, including reading notation, playing scales and chords, use of pedals, sight reading, terminology, and theory.
Music 341 Intermediate Piano play all Major and Minor scales with correct fingering and rhythm in four octaves, chord progression I-IV, I-V7-I in Major and Minor keys, and from Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century, and Contemporary styles.
Music 411 Elementary Voice I Learn basic vocal production techniques, proper stance and breathing techniques, increased vocal freedom, and improved articulation and tone. Perform solo literature.
Music 412 Elementary Voice II This continues basic vocal technique, further practice, and performance experience.
Music 413 Elementary Voice III Continued voice building, work toward increased vocal range, richness, and expressiveness, and learn repertoire of moderate difficulty, including art songs in English, Italian, German, or French.
Music 414 Elementary Voice IV Gain further experience and refinement of technique, and increased difficulty of repertoire and performance. Also, develop the ability to analyze and interpret song repertoire.
Music 650 Beginning Guitar Learn to read guitar music, including notes, scales, and chords up to the 5th fret for the left hand. Learn the correct right-hand technique for both fingerstyle & picking. Techniques can be applied to classical, commercial, or folk styles.
Music 651 - 654 Classical Guitar I - IV Reinforce fundamental music reading, right and left-hand playing techniques, and performance of solo guitar pieces.
