Assessment post AB 705/1705

If English, math, statistics, or other quantitative reasoning coursework is required for a student’s major, a student may enroll in the courses at the transfer level. Los Angeles Pierce College highly recommends that students use the program mapper and the identified Math and English courses.  Students are encouraged to and can register for transfer level courses.  Tutoring, concurrent support courses, and support-enhanced courses are also available in the district.

Students should consult a counselor and/or the catalog about courses required for the major and on support options.

Pre-transfer level English (English 28) and math (Math 75, 134, 228A) courses are available to students in the student populations:

  • Students enrolled in a noncredit ESL course who have not graduated from a United States high school or been issued a high school equivalency certificate;
  • Students with documented disabilities in educational assistance classes, as described in Section 56028 of Title 5 of the California Code of Regulations, who are otherwise not able to benefit from general college classes even with appropriate academic adjustments, auxiliary aids, and services;
  • Students enrolled in adult education programs who have not graduated from a United States high school or been issued a high school equivalency certificate;
  • Current high school students in dual enrollment; or
  • Pursuing a Numerical Control Programming Certificate of Achievement.

If interested students belong to one of these populations, they can complete this form to indicate interest in one of the pre-transfer classes so the College can review and document eligibility.

ESL Guided Placement Process

Students whose native language is not English or who did not grow up speaking English in the home can choose from two ESL pathways at Pierce.

  • Noncredit ESL classes are meant for students interested in learning English for non-academic purposes (such as speaking English in everyday life at home and in public spaces).
  • Credit ESL classes are intended for students who are pursuing academic goals, such as degree or transfer.

Placement Process for Credit E.S.L. at LAPC

Pierce offers a comprehensive Credit E.S.L. Program for students whose native language is not English or who did not grow up speaking English. Our program serves a variety of students from different language and cultural backgrounds. Our 5-level reading, writing, listening and speaking sequences prepare students for skills that are needed for both academic and professional work. We provide quality instruction and supportive student services to help students meet their personal goals online and in person.

Our classes range from low-intermediate to high-advanced and prepare students for success in English 101. Students can attend classes both in-person on our campus and online via Canvas.

If you are interested in taking ESL courses for non-academic purposes, please refer to the non-credit ESL program at Pierce College.
