APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS


 Requirements

 

 

Applicants are required to complete (1) prerequisite courses and (2) the TEAS test. 

TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skill) version 7: All students are required to take TEAS version 7. This assessment measures basic skills in the areas of Reading, Mathematics, Science, English and Language Usage. The TEAS is a 170-item, multiple choice exam, lasting 3 to 4 hours and given in paper and pencil format. TEAS V test is offered at Pierce College. Prepare for this exam by utilizing the work-study book (TEAS 7 edition). Go to Assessment Technologies Institute, LLC to create an account, college is listed under Los Angeles Pierce College.

Applicants must complete the prerequisites prior to application to the nursing program - courses must be finished (showing a grade) before applying:

*A combined Anatomy/Physiology course of 8 units with lab may be substituted.
**One course in Elementary Algebra or successful completion of competency exam is a prerequisite for the program. Math 115 or higher will meet this requirement.

Course Equivalences: Prerequisite courses taken outside of the Los Angeles Community College District (including High School AP classes in English and Math) must be evaluated by the LA Pierce Counseling Department.

GPA requirements, Course Repetitions and Recency:

  1. Have an overall GPA of 2.5 in Anatomy, Physiology, and Microbiology, with no grade less than "C" in any one of these courses and no more than one repetition of any of these courses will be applied to the GPA. A "W" is considered an attempt at taking the course and a grade received after a withdrawal "W" is counted as course repetition.
  2. Have a grade of "C" or better for all other prerequisite courses. Be in good academic standing and not be on academic or progress probation.
  3. Have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 for all college course work taken.
  4. We do NOT have a recency policy. Courses taken in the past are not considered expired.

Eligible applicants are selected for the program by random lottery and will be notified by email. All applicants must provide a valid email address.

Additional Graduation Requirements

  1. General Education Requirements: All students must complete a pattern of general education course work. Nursing students may follow Plan B, C or D as stated in the Pierce Catalogue. Please consult a Pierce counselor to determine the best plan for you.
  2. Graduation Competency in Math and English. Students will meet the English competency requirement by completing English 101. Students must meet with a Pierce counselor to determine Math competency satisfaction.
  3. Complete one of the following: Speech 101, 102, 104, 121 and Anthropology (Anthropology 102) or Sociology (Sociology 1 or 2) This courses may also be used to fulfill a general education requirement. Once Accepted

  1. Receive a program information packet.
  2. Complete the Los Angeles Pierce College application obtained from the Admissions and Records Office.
  3. Register for appropriate classes.
  4. Complete all departmental health requirements; must be current for the length of enrollment in program.
  5. Purchase professional malpractice insurance; must be current for the length of enrollment.
  6. Present valid Los Angeles City Hospital Fire Safety and American Heart Association (CPR-BCLS) cards. These must remain valid for the length of enrollment in program.
  7. Purchase the designated Los Angeles Pierce College nursing student uniform.
  8. Purchase the current Nursing Student Handbook.
  9. Enroll in the National Student Nursing Association (NSNA).
  10. Participate in standardized testing.
  11. Comply with all college and departmental regulations.
  12. Successfully complete mandatory Background Check and Drug Screening and provide certificate to department.

Nursing Program Costs | LAPC

There is a tuition charge for all students as determined by the Los Angeles Community College District. Students are responsible for their own living accommodations and transportation to and from clinical facilities. There are additional costs for uniforms, books, supplies, pre-entrance health/hospital requirements, and liability insurance.
